Big Sky Ranch

Today, Big Sky Ranch Animal Sanctuary is the only non-kill Sanctuary of its kind in Eastern and Southern Ontario, due to its nature of working with many kinds of animals as opposed to limiting its resources to a limited few. To date, the ranch has helped over 1,800 animals of different kinds and sizes achieve a happy and healthy future through its rehabilitation and adoption programs. Big Sky Ranch Animal Sanctuary resides on 26 acres of land and currently houses over 100 abused and unwanted animals such as horses, ponies, goats, donkeys, turkeys, ducks, geese, roosters, llamas, sheep, cats, dogs, rabbits, pigs, cows, buffalo, and emus!

Go & Play Stables

Go and Play Stable is a registered Canadian charity, dedicated to taking Standardbreds off the track, and giving them wonderful second careers!

We rely solely on donations to run our facility and none of our volunteers receive any form of monetary compensation. Our volunteers are often reaching into their own pockets to pay for feed, bedding and other items needed at our facility.

The goal of Go and Play Stable is to promote the use of the Standardbred breed for sport and to educate the general public to acknowledge the breed as being suitable to more than just harness racing.

Horse Rescue Ontario & Sanctuary

Each year thousands of horses suffer from physical and psychological abuse.  These equines need protection.  It is our sincere goal to help as many horses as possible to have the safe, happy retirement that they deserve after years of devotion and loyal service to the humans who used them for showing, racing or pleasure riding.  We are a compassionate group of volunteers dedicated to rescue as many horses as possible from slaughter, neglect, and abuse and to find permanent loving homes for them when possible or to retire here where they are loved and safe.

Every penny goes to the horses for feed, hay, medical care and other necessities.  There will be no tomorrow for many unwanted horses, however with your help we can save many that otherwise would perish.

Sometimes there are horses available for adoption.  Most of the horses here presently are lame and unable to be ridden but many would make a good companion horse.

Kawartha Horse Adoption – Freedom Valley Horses

I am Christine Markle-Welch, my husband is Howie Welch, we started our rescue in May 08 as a result of watching so many nice horses end up going for meat. To date we have saved 65 horses from that terrible end and are always ready to help more. We are a non profit organization although we are not yet registered, we believe that profiting from our horses situation would be wrong. Our goal is to save and find homes for as many horses as we possibly can and work on training those who need it so that they won’t end up in that position again. I am blessed by my role in each of their lives and not a day goes by that I am not grateful for the horses that we have here, and my already adopted sweethearts and their new loving families. Our own personal pets are, Follie, my Arab/Standardbred cross mare, Mumford, our baby mule (mumfy for short), and our very large & very friendly goat Jacob.

I am thrilled to announce the addition of Tanya Smith, trainer extraordinaire, to our team (!!!! Tanya has a natural, non brutal & kind way of training and totally bombproofing a horse. She specializes in gaited horses, many trainers are not familiar with the requirements of training a gaitied horse and can screw it up, making the training to gait even more difficult. Upon leaving Tanyas care your horse will be pretty much bombproof, road and trail safe, any other issues can also be addressed. ‘We are so happy to have Tanya on board, we have had other trainers, but Tanya is very special! and does a fabulous job. Thanks Tanya!! Yay!!! Our adoption fees go towards saving the “next one(s)”(it is a snowball effect), please, if you or someone you know may be interested in one of our babies please don’t hesitate to contact us. It is hard to have to let one go for meat just because we don’t have the funds!

Kindred Farm Rescue

Kindred Farm Vision: The provision of a safe, experienced, educated and sufficiently resourced farm facility that provides refuge/sanctuary for equines destined for, or at imminent risk of slaughter, with a view to re-habilitating them sufficiently that they can then be appropriately re-homed, without again ending up at risk of slaughter, abuse or mistreatment.  And, in the event that they prove not to be candidates for successful rehabilitation, to provide an acceptable alternative through humane euthanasia or the provision of life-long sanctuary.

We love each and every one of our horses!  And Tanya has a special love and appreciation of Thoroughbreds.

Some of the horses featured here are ready to be sold, while others may still be in the assessment or rehabilitation stage.  Those that are for sale must go to approved homes with a contract.  References are required.

A pre-purchase vet exam is always recommended.  We will make available all vet records, x-rays (if any) and any history we have or any knowledge of health/behaviour issues.  Our policy is 100% disclosure.  Our priority is appropriate re-homing: A good fit is the most important criteria!  First come, first serve doesn’t work at KF.

Should you purchase a horse and decide that it is not suitable, you can request to return it to KF, but your money will not be refunded because it will already have been spent on other horses.

The Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society (OSAS)

The Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society (OSAS) is an approved charitable organization, founded in 1996 to assist in the adoption and relocation of retired and non-racing Standardbred horses within Ontario.

OSAS is operated by its own Board of Directors, and is funded in part through fundraising, by some horse industry organizations and by private donations.

Our program helps to educate and assist in the retraining and management of the horses. We match the desires and the abilities of each adoptive family to the temperament and capabilities of the horse. Our follow-up on each horse after adoption adds to the strength of this worthwhile program.

Volunteers and temporary foster homes are invaluable to the success of our program, and we are always looking for more help.

Transitions Thoroughbreds

This program has been developed to provide off track thoroughbreds an opportunity to transition from race horse to riding horse. All horses sold and/or adopted out of this program will be sold and/or adopted out with a contract that will follow and protect them for life.

All of our re-started horses are worked with and handled by a professional trainer.  All horses in the program are started with solids basics on the longe line first and then move on to a flatwork program before they are started through gymnastics and over fences.  They are also occasionally free longed and free jumped.  We do not allow anyone to try track broke only horses.

Penny Lane Farm Sanctuary

Penny Lane Farm Sanctuary is a registered Not-For-Profit Corporation. We provide sanctuary to horses and other animals who have suffered from neglect or abuse or loss of trust, or who are at risk of being sent to slaughter. Our primary goal is to rescue, rehabilitate, and provide a safe haven for life. Through community involvement and education, we aim to promote compassion and kindness to all animals. We employ only positive reward-based methods when interacting with the animals. Our philosophy is that they should be “free to just be.” Each day we learn more as we explore the relationship between humans and non-humans in an environment that emphasizes mutual respect and appreciation.

Note: we are a volunteer-run sanctuary that does not receive any grants or ongoing funding. We welcome support in the form of donations, wish list, and volunteer help. Everything goes directly towards taking care of the horses. If you can help in any way, please contact us.

Penny Lane Farm Sanctuary doesn’t have animals for adoption, they care for rescued animals on their farm for the animals life. Please consider helping them giving many animals a second chance.
